Matariki is the celebration of the Maori New Year. Matariki is a cluster of 7 stars that can be seen in the dawn sky in late May or early June. It signals the start of a new phase of life. The middle syndicate decided to celebrate Matariki by weaving flax flowers (harkeke putiputi), creating our own Matariki dawn sky and sharing a hangi together. The hangi tasted extra delicious as the vegetables had all been expertly peeled by the children. So Mums and Dads don't be afraid to let your children loose with potato peelers at home.
