Each day Room 8 children are practicing Oral News Reporting. The reporting theme on a Wednesday is Science. Mac brought to school a solar oven he had made at home and explained to his group how it worked. We decided to test it out on Ranjiv's pie. We place the pie in the oven and lined up the foil lid so that it was in direct sunlight. The foil reflected the heat of the sun onto the pie. Over a two hour period the pie started to warm up, but we had to stop our experiment short as a local bird was eyeing it up, as were other children coming out of their classes for lunch. Ranjiv said it was fairly warm and of course delicious. We are going to try melting marshmellows next.
